The Need for Power Generator

In 1960, the entire American Northeast experienced a massive blackout caused by the tripping of a single faulty circuit breaker in one substation. In 1977, New Yorkers stared across the river at the bright lights of New jersey after four lightning strikes caused the entire grid supplying the Big Apple to shut down. In 2003, a massive US blackout affected more than 60 million people. In more recent memory, Hurricane Katrina left New Orleans powerless.

The Consequences of No Power
Those events highlighted the stress those societies were experiencing. The 1960 blackout showed people helping each other get through the incident, even assisting police in unsnarling traffic and keeping order. The 1977 blackout saw the breakdown of government authority with widespread looting and rioting. Things were even worse in New Orleans where thugs shot it out with cops and people waited a long time for any help to come to them, thanks to lack of communications and the resulting inertia.

Our society has come to depend so much on electricity that a few hours’ or days’ loss is a major catastrophe. In some situations, the loss of power for just an hour can spell death. Without power, an airport cannot operate its radars, radios and lights to coordinate aircraft activity in its area Without electricity, hospital patients undergoing procedures and those dependent on life-support systems can die in less than five minutes. Without electricity, food will eventually spoil and water may become unavailable due to the stoppage of pumps. Without power, companies and government agencies might lose irreplaceable information.


What are Power Generators?
It’s reasons similar to these that have prompted many to buy and install a power generator, whether it be in their homes, establishments or offices. Electric generators can supply enough power to keep essential services going during a blackout. They can also bring the benefits of electricity to those living in far-flung areas not serviced by a power utility.

Electric generators are motors married to generators. They are also known as gen-sets and are available in wide variety suitable for different situations. Gen-sets can deliver from 30 watts to almost 3000 kilowatts and run by different fuels. There are gasoline generators, diesel generators, CNG generators, LNG generators, and propane generators. These are the most common kinds.

There are machines which function as standby generators, supplying power when the lights go out, or portable generators which can be transported to and supply power virtually anywhere. Generators have supplied power to mines. More exotic ones have powered satellites in deep space (the Pioneer satellites which will eventually exit the Solar System carry thermionic generators with them, because solar cells are useless that far from the sun), and gone with man to the Moon.

Anyone who’s seen a genset in action will know how loud they can be. The biggest and most powerful can produce sound louder than 100 decibels, almost as loud as a jet engine at point-blank range and more than enough to cause deafness.

Generators and Noise Pollution
Since electrical generators are meant to be active for hours at a time, this can be a serious problem for any people in the vicinity. Sustained noise levels as low as 40 dBa have been shown to cause sleep disturbance, hypertension, stress, stimulate aggression, increase accidents, and promote anxiety and anti-social behavior.

Because of this, many cities across the US have enacted anti-noise ordinances. In Boston, for instance, it is illegal to produce noise in excess of 50 dBa between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. or in excess of 70 dBa at all other hours. The punishments range from fines to seizure of property.


Noise Reduction in Generators
Noise is often a function of power. Commonly a generator will produce more noise when it is under load than when it is not supplying power to anything. Generator noise comes from two main sources - engine noise and exhaust noise. Many generator manufacturers offer noise attenuation solutions for their products. There are often aftermarket options available to also reduce the noise that generator sets make.

One way of reducing noise can be to build barrier walls around the generator. As long as these block the line of sight between the generator and the listeners, noise should be reduced. But while this is a good way to reduce airborne sound transmission, a solid floor can still transmit vibrations from the diesel generator or gasoline generator used for standby electric generation purposes. This is called Impact Insulation Class transmission. It can be alleviated by careful design of the building structure and the use of sound-deadening techniques, structures and materials. These include mounting the generator off the floor, or placing it on an absorbent cushion made out of cork or balsa, or separating work and living spaces from the generator location.

Barrier walls are of little use to portable generators, however. Take the case of a generator used to provide electrical power in a temporary campsite. Another way of approaching silent generators is to purchase a quieter generating set in the first place. Most generators are either air-cooled generators or water-cooled generators. Water-cooled generators are often less noisy than their air-cooled counterparts, whose concession to noise control may be as little as a muffler in the exhaust.

Pros and Cons of Gas Generator

The popularity of electric generators for power use means that several types have been developed. In conventional power plants used for generating electricity, steam is used to power the turbines. This steam is raised using different sources of heat. One common way is through the burning of coal, which is a very cheap and plentiful resource but extremely polluting. Another is through the use of geothermal steam sources. Other, more unorthodox methods of driving generators include using giant rotors to catch the wind (wind generators), solar energy to raise steam or make electricity directly (solar generators), tidal forces, or nuclear reactions. Midway between these ecologically-clean methods and the dirtiness of coal-fired plants lies the gas generator.

Natural Gas and Propane
Energy to drive the generator in gas generators comes from a range of fuels. The most common of these are natural gas and propane. Natural gas is composed of hydrocarbons like methane and is extracted along with crude oil or from gas wells. It is stored in liquefied form (Liquefied Natural Gas, LNG) or compressed (Compressed Natural Gas, CNG) for portable use, or supplied through gas lines for use in establishments and homes.

Propane is a byproduct of the processing of natural gas or petroleum refining. First identified in 1910, it is an odorless hydrocarbon which, like natural gas, is more clean-burning than gasoline or diesel. This means natural gas generators and propane generators are more emissions compliant than either gasoline generators or diesel generators. Propane, which is also known as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) when used as a fuel, is stored in tanks of varying sizes. Commercial propane isn’t pure. In the US, it is 90% propane and 10% butane and propylene along with odorants so people can detect its presence if there’s a gas leak. Other countries use different propane mixtures.


Advantages and Disadvantages
Both natural gas and propane generators are ideal for small portable generators designed to function as standby generators during blackouts. They are quiet and clean. Small propane generators also cost less than comparable diesel units. In certain areas, natural gas pipelines are already installed, which means that there is no need to store the generator fuel. This increases safety and convenience as there is no need to store a large amount of flammable substance and secure the permits to do so.

This can, however, be a disadvantage during natural disasters like earthquakes. The gas line might rupture and prevent the generator from running just when it’s needed the most. Natural gas and propane also contain less energy than gasoline and diesel fuel. They also present a serious fire and explosion hazard in the event of a fuel line rupture. Natural gas and propane generators are also more expensive to operate than diesel generators.

Overview of Industrial Generators

Today’s manufacturing plants, marvels of modern engineering and efficiency, require huge amounts of electrical power to keep them going. And because many of them, especially in developed countries, use computers and robots to stay efficient and competitive, the need for a safe, constant power supply is now a critical need. A few hours of downtime in today’s business world can cost a manufacturer millions in delayed or lost orders, storage problems and possibly even equipment damage.

The Worth of Industrial Generators
To counter this, many companies have purchased electrical generators either as standby generators to activate in event of a power outage or as supplemental power in case the utility power becomes unstable or is insufficient for the factory’s needs. Either type of generator is able to be switched into or out of a circuit as an automatic transfer switch generator or a manual transfer switch generator. This is important in less well-developed areas where commercial power generation is limited in reach or amount.

Industrial generators are tailored to the loads they are expected to handle. These are measured in volts, amperes and wattage. A volt is a unit measuring the electrical pressure in a current. This is either 110 or 220 depending on the respective country. Amperes are a measure of how much current is flowing through a circuit; 1 amp equal 6.24 x 1018 electrons per second flowing past a fixed point. Wattage is the electrical power produced by the generator.


Characteristics of Industrial Generators
Because there are many types of industry and many varying requirements for combinations of amperes, watts and voltage, there are many types of generators available. Generator power ratings can vary from as little as 30 watts to over 2 million watts in some cases. They can be as small as a footlocker or as large as a building. Some industrial generators are gasoline generators, but most are powered by cheaper kinds of fuel, such as diesel generators, bunker fuel generators or natural gas generators.

Because a premium is placed on economy and reliability, industrial generators are built to last. They have maximum power ratings far in excess of their normal operating loads. They are usually equipped with safety systems that shut them down if they start to overheat. Safety considerations and laws also mean that there are some kind of fire protection and noise abatement systems in place. Since they also represent expensive investments, it is natural that they should be protected in this manner.

Functions of Diesel Generator

A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which differs from a gasoline engine in its choice of fuel and the way it works. Whereas a gasoline engine relies on a spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture in its combustion chamber, a diesel engine relies on high compression for the same effect. Diesel engines are more efficient, more robust, more reliable, and cheaper to operate than gasoline engines but at the cost of being heavier, dirtier, noisier, and limited to operating within a narrower power band.

Uses of Diesel Generators
These drawbacks are important in applications such as vehicle power where lightness and power ratios are important, but they are not as critical when the engine is used to power an electric generator, so the diesel generator has become a popular purchase for those looking for efficient power sources and independence from the utility electric grid. They come in all shapes and sizes, for use in environments as diverse as the home, in construction sites, mining sites, outdoor recreation facilities, archaeological digs, remote communications and surveillance facilities, farms, logging camps, shopping malls, office buildings, ships, oil platforms, airports, hospitals, and factories.

A diesel generator can be used as an independent generator in remote areas where there is no available electricity, a standby generator to furnish power when the mains go out, or to provide supplemental power in case the main supply becomes inadequate or unstable due to increased loads or equipment failure. There are commercial generators which also contribute to the electrical power supply used in power stations. For example, the UK can call on a reserve of around 2 gigawatts from reserve diesel generators to add to its electric grid when the need arises. While this is expensive, running the diesel generators in this manner is actually cheaper than cycling a large power plant and putting it into action for the limited time a peak load lasts.


Specifications of Diesel Generators
Diesel generator sets can supply anywhere from 30 watts to over 2 million watts. They can put out either single-phase or three-phase AC electrical power at 50 or 60 Hz. They can come in air-cooled or water-cooled varieties and function as portable generators, industrial generators or commercial generators. They can function using a wide variety of fuels, all of which are more energy-dense than gasoline but have trouble staying liquid at low temperatures without the use of additives. They represent a choice of generator sets with distinct characteristics like natural gas generators, gasoline generators and propane generators.

They can also provide power to maintain communications and provide lighting, heat and refrigeration during emergencies.

Another factor is that gasoline engines are easy to manufacture and their fuel systems are less complex than that of generators that run off natural gas (NG). That’s why gasoline-powered generators are a good standby generator choice over diesel generators, propane generators, compressed natural gas generators, liquefied natural gas generators, or other types of electrical generators. Portable gasoline generators come in a price range that enables more people to buy them than other types of emergency generator.


Disadvantages of Gasoline Generators
Of course, they have their drawbacks. Gasoline is more expensive than diesel, NG or propane, so it doesn’t make economic sense to use it in situations when the genset is meant to pull prime duty (be the prime source of power) or used for very long, like industrial generators or commercial generators. It is more reasonable to use it for jobs which only last for a limited time. Gasoline also cannot be stored for very long as it tends to gum up in the generator fuel tank and lines if left alone. It also produces dangerous fumes during operation and so needs good ventilation. Portable gasoline generators often put a premium of transportability and so are often air-cooled and not housed in an enclosure. This means they are less fuel-efficient and noisier but cheaper to procure and easier to maintain than liquid-cooled units.

A General Idea on Electric Generator

An electric generator is a machine for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. The mechanical energy can come from a variety of sources. There are hand-cranked generators, generators powered by falling water, wind generators, thermoelectric generators, photovoltaic generators, magnetohydrodynamic generators which extract energy directly from hot gases, and generators coupled to various types of internal combustion engines - gasoline generators, diesel generators, natural gas generators, and propane generators.

How an Electric Generator Works
Virtually all generators function on the electric induction principle discovered by Michael Faraday in the early 1830s. This basically means that if a magnet in close proximity to a length of electrically-conductive wire is moved, the electrons in that wire will be induced to flow, and a current will be produced. The only generators which don’t work like this are electrostatic generators, which are used mainly for scientific purposes.

The first dynamos were developed in the 1800s and represented the first practical devices that could be used to supply electrical power. They revolutionized factories and changed man’s way of life.

Since modern technological society is so dependent on a steady supply of electricity, a blackout of even only a few hours can spell “millions of dollars” worth of lost income, damage and even deaths. With the increase in blackouts in the past few years, people, businesses and government agencies have taken to buying electric generators as standby generators, waiting to go into action a few seconds after the utility electricity goes out. There has also been an increase in the use of small, light portable generators to furnish power in places not serviced by the electric company.

Generators are classified according to output power, cycle and voltage. Choosing the right one for a job is critical. If the generator is forced to run near its peak capacity, its parts wear out, and its service life is shortened. If it runs at far below its maximum rating, then money is wasted in buying capacity that isn’t used.

Generators and Its Types

Today, we are very dependent on a steady power supply. The use of electrical devices like refrigerators and computers means we can’t go without power for very long or there will be serious consequences. Even so, power outages still occur. The one the US experienced in 2003 affected over 60 million people and was the largest outage to occur in US history. California recently experienced a wave of rolling blackouts. A New Orleans without power descended in chaos in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

To counter this, many institutions and individuals have bought their own power sources in the form of electrical generators.


How a Generator Works
Basically speaking, a generator is a device which uses a magnet in order to induce a flow of electric current in a circuit, much like how a water pump pushes water through a hose.

A generator functions because of the relation between magnetism and electricity. If electrons (the parts of an atom which carry a negative charge) move through something conductive like a wire, they generate a magnetic field. Conversely, if a magnetic field is placed near a wire and moved, its motion causes the electrons in the wire to move because of a change in electrical potential. This is known as a current.

In the 1830s, Michael Faraday discovered this principle and built the first electromagnetic generator known as the Faraday disc, which used a copper disc rotating between the poles of a horseshoe magnet. In 1832, the first dynamo was built consisting of a power-producing armature moving within a stationary magnetic field.


Types of Generators
The first generators were used in industry and later on to provide electrical power to homes. The past few years have seen the proliferation of engine-generator sets also known as gensets or simply generators for a variety of purposes. There are gasoline generators, diesel generators, liquefied petroleum gas generators, and propane generators; there are even human-powered generators, such as those found in some types of radios and the small sets found in bicycle lights.

Standby generators - These are large, often permanent units that are stationed outside a home, office building, warehouse, shopping mall, and the like to provide backup power in case the mains electricity switches off. These sets are plugged into the main electric lines and can sense when a power interruption has occurred. They automatically start and provide emergency power generating a few seconds after coming online.

Portable generators - These are designed to be transported whether on a cart, trailer or by hand to provide power where there is no utility power supply, as in campsites and construction sites. Their output is sufficient to run appliances such as pumps, refrigerators, lights, radios, and televisions, and the larger ones can be used to power sound systems, high-intensity lights and parked aircraft. The smaller generators typically use gasoline as fuel, whereas the larger ones, capable of providing up to 1,000 kilowatts or more of electricity, use either gasoline, diesel fuel, natural gas, or propane.

Commercial generators - In areas where the power supply is intermittent or lacking as in Third World provincial areas, generators can also be set up to provide additional power.

What Should I use - LPG, Petrol or Diesel

Conversion of small petrol & diesel powered appliances and equipment to LPG Gas (propane or butane) is becoming increasingly popular not least because of running cost savings.

Converting your generator to run on LP gas is a relatively simple task and has a number of advantages.

Lower running cost. - LPG is about 50% cheaper than petrol.
Lower maintenance cost with extended life for spark plugs and engine oil.
Silent running - LP gas powered engine runs quieter than petrol equivalents.
Running time can be extended according to cylinder size.
Easier refueling - just change the cylinder without stopping the set.
No storage problems compared with petrol.
Automatic cylinder change over valve changes cylinder without stopping set.
Fire risk considerably reduced with minimum risk of fuel spillage.
Cleaner emissions allow use in public areas and other pollution sensitive applications.
No reduction in performance when load demand fluctuates.
Low load - No damage to engine when running at very small loads
How Propane Gas Works.
Propane gas can be stored under pressure in its liquid form - LPG (liquefied Petroleum Gas). Thus we can store very large amounts of gas in a small space. By opening the cylinder valve we release some of this pressure to supply our generator. More liquid simply vaporises to replace the gas used. Eventually all the liquid is used up and you need to refill from your LPG supplier.

In extreme cold or after prolonged heavy use. Propane liquid may be slow to vaporise. This can be overcome using larger cylinders or by connecting extra cylinders. Never apply naked flame to heat up the cylinder.

Siting your Propane Cylinder.
Propane is the perfect fuel for many domestic applications & environments. It's an ideal environmental solution to a host of Commercial, Agricultural, Industrial and Automotive Power problems.

Because it vaporises even in cold conditions, Propane is ideal for outdoor cylinder installation. Propane should be installed out of doors and piped to the generator according to the relevant LPG Codes of Practice & LPG Industry Guidance Notes.

If indoor siting of Propane cylinders is unavoidable (e.g. for temporary heating) you must tell your insures.

Cylinders should be sited on level hard standing with proper access for delivery.

Position
Propane is stored as a liquid. Cylinders must always be transported, stored and used in the upright position. Never tilt cylinders when is use - liquid gas could enter the engines fuel intake.

Installation
Service and Repairs should never be attempted by untrained persons. It is recommended that you contact your local CORGI registered contractor or supplier for gas cylinders. DSI power ltd. can make the arrangements for your first delivery but the long term contract has to be between the user and the supplier.

Your LPG Generator can be connected directly to a bulk LPG storage tank via a pressure reducing valve supplied and fitted by your local CORGI register gas fitter.

How do I connect to my building?

Manual Connection


The drawings below shows a small generator connected to a fixed power inlet socket mounted on the wall and then connected to the transfer switch. This transfer switch can be automatic or manual.For maximum safely you have to disconnect the mains power from your house before you can safely connect the power from the generator. To do this one uses a TRANSFER SWITCH connected between the utility meter and the consumer unit or fuse board. This Transfer Switch also has a connection sockets for a power and control cables to the generator.

SAFETY For maximum safely you have to disconnect the mains power from your house before you can safely connect the power from the generator. It is most strongly recommenced that the rating of your transfer switch should not be BELOW 100 amps. It is strongly recommended that all installations be completed by a qualified electrician

Automatic Connection


You will need the Automatic Mains Failure and Load Transfer Switch - AMF.

When the mains fail, the AMF panel will automatically disconnect the mains - give the generator a signal to start. When the generator is running smoothly transfer your house to the generator'. Power will now be flowing from the generator into your home.

Remember your generator will not normally give you as much power as the mains to support ALL your house hold appliances. So be very careful on just how many appliances and lights you turn on when powering you home with a generator.

Your AMF panel will know when the mains supply is restored. It will then wait a few minutes making sure the mains electricity is steady before it automatically returns the house load to the mains shutting down your generator until the next time you suffer a power outage.

How Silent is a running Generator?

Just how quiet is a silent running generator? They can be very quiet but not completely silent.

Below we have tried to simplify noise level to help you understand how noisy our generators are in layman's terms. Noise levels are expressed as Lwa ( this is a European standard ) or the English American standard dB(A) - decibels

Noise is not measured on a linear/straight line scale - Noise level doubles every 3-5 dB(A). So 73/75 dB(A) is twice as loud as 70 dB(A) or two 70 dB(A) units running together would produce between 73 and 75 dB(A)

Current standards allow employees to work in 85 dB(A) for up to eight hours. Noise however is very subjective.

How much power do I need?

Industrial
Do you want to support all or part of your factory load? Unless you wish to separate essential from none essential services, then the generator is normally sized to the main's incoming supply breaker rating." "If the generator is to support only part of your building and essential services then you could use a small lower cost generator. But be careful for most electric motors need far more power to start them than to keep them running.

OK! So now we have a list showing just how much power you use. Don't forget you can't run all the appliances at the same time so rationalise just what would be running.

The worst case to have a power cut could be when your washing machine (3kW) is in the middle of its heat cycle - the dishwasher (2.5kW) is trying to clean up last nights dinner and you have just switch on the kettle for a cup of tea.(2.8kW) Hey! - a total of 8.3kW and that's not to mention the radio - a few lights - fridge - freezer. So we could be up to around 9kW.

That's why DSI recommend the 10kVA P12000 Power Station as the best value for money.

Where can I find someone to install my generator set and transfer switch?

Installing a generator set and transfer switch is not very difficult, if you have experience in similar installations. If you do not wish to do the work yourself, you can hire a qualified electrician or electrical contractor. Ask your neighbors for a recommendation. Or get a few bids (you can develop a list of potential installers from the Yellow pages or your local BBB). You can also check:

What size battery do I need?

All battery sizes are given in the Specification pages.

What color is the generator set painted?

The only color available is Almond, as pictured on the Home Page. (The transfer switches are painted industrial grey.)

Can these Winco units be used to supply continuous power?

Yes, but this use does void the warranty.

These units are designed for standby or emergency use. If you run them continuously, they will wear out in just a few years. Used as they were designed, with proper maintenance, they will last for 10-20 years.

How often do these units need maintenance?

The oil and filters must be changed once each year. In addition, the equipment should be inspected carefully every 3 months. See your manual for specific information.

Can these generator sets be installed indoors?

Yes, if done with great care. The exhaust must be piped to the outside in a safe manner. And "ventilation air" must be provided to prevent the engine from overheating.

Where can I see one of these units before I buy it? Do you have a showroom?

What is an automatic standby generator?
An automatic standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates whether you are at home or away. It automatically supplies power to essential circuits of your home within seconds of a utility outage. After utility power returns, the generator shuts itself off and awaits the next outage. It operates on natural gas or liquid propane and sits outside just like a central air conditioning unit.

What will it power?
GUARDIAN® generators supply electricity to the electrical panel circuits of your home through a built-in load center. You select the number of circuits you want to protect and match it to the appropriate generator system. Everything on that circuit will be protected. Do they have to be maintained?

What is the advantage of an aluminum enclosure?

What is Whisper-Test™? (GUARDIAN QuietSouce models only)
Whisper-Test is a feature that reduces noise by 50% during the generator’s weekly self-test cycle. That makes it as quiet as a car idling in your driveway. The generator starts up and operates at a reduced speed, lowering sound output by as much as 12 decibels for units that normally run at higher speeds under load. This allows for near-silent operation in test mode and satisfies all known sound ordinances.

How do I select a generator that’s right for me?
The most accurate way is to have an electrician apply an amp meter to the circuits or appliances that will operate with emergency backup power. Measurements should be taken as the appliance starts up. That’s because start up requires the greatest amount of power.

The generator that I've chosen has a 100-amp automatic transfer switch. What if I have 200-amp service?
Emergency circuits should always be isolated by the emergency load center. An isolated sub-panel helps to prevent overload situations.

Is a 200-amp automatic transfer switch available for the air-cooled models and the 20 kW liquid-cooled model?
No. Because a 200-amp transfer switch is not necessary. The outputs of these generators are safely carried with a 100-amp automatic transfer switch.

What is the cost of a service/maintenance contract?

15W-40 is recommended for all liquid-cooled units. The oil should be a SAE rated high detergent oil that meets API Service Class SF requirements for gasoline engines.

Propane tanks are usually rated by pounds. Is there a conversion that can be applied to the fuel consumption numbers?
Yes. For general conversion, propane weighs 4.24 pounds per gallon. 1 lb. = 8.58 cu. ft. 1 gallon = 36.39 cu. ft.

What do I need to know when installing a generator set?
The following all need to be considered when you are thinking of installing a generator set:

Location - you will need to think of where you want to place the generator set - ideally it should be located in a place with adequate access and lighting for service and maintenance purposes. Generators can be located inside or outside your premises - FG Wilson offer Sound Attenuated Canopies when generators are to be located outside.
Mounting - generator sets should be mounted on a level base and use anti-vibration mounts when necessary. Most level surfaces are suitable, if installing a set on soil or a roof you should consult a civil engineer.
Ventilation and Cooling - it is important to make sure that there is enough ventilation to help keep the generator cool and to remove excess fumes and heat produced through engine combustion.
Fuel System - you will need to consider how you will refuel your generator. Several refuelling options are available from manual pumps to fully automatic systems. Consideration must be given to local fuel storage regulations.

Can I wire a generator set into my home's electrical system?
Generators can be wired into your home's electrical system with a transfer switch, however these need to be installed by qualified electricians. It is unsafe for you to attempt to wire such a system independently.


How does a generator set work with the mains electricity supply?
Constant mains electricity is supplied into premises via electrical cabling. When this mains electricity is disrupted due to power failures, a signal is sent from the transfer switch to the generating set which then starts up and sends generated electricity back into the premises. When the mains supply is restored the transfer switch blocks the power from the generating set and reverts back to the main supply.

What is a transfer switch?
FG Wilson currently supply two types - manual and automatic.

A transfer switch is a panel that is wired into the premises electrical distribution system to allow a generator to be used. It prevents the generator from back feeding into the mains power supply which could cause serious injury to line workers trying to restore utility power supplies.


How long will a generator run on a tank of fuel?
The amount of time that a generator will run on a tank of fuel depends on the size of the tank, the amount of time in which the generator is in use and the load that the generator has to fulfil. All FG Wilson sets are designed to run for eight hours at their full rated load, often much longer.


How long can a standby generator be continuously operated?
There is no set answer to this question. FG Wilson generators are designed to last for long periods of time and function in heavy duty operations. However, it is important that the set is inspected regularly between each use, before restarting to check such things as fuel and oil levels and any signs of abnormalities. FG Wilson sets can run continuously when the amount of load is lowered.


Will a generator be noisy?
All generators produce some amount of noise from the exhaust, the engine and the airflow. FG Wilson generators are designed to provide maximum noise control and are all noise level tested during production to ensure they meet relevant legislation. Our generators can be supplied with Sound and Super Sound Attenuated canopies that help to absorb excess noise.

Can enclosures be built around generator sets?
FG Wilson produce both open sets and canopied sets - if your generator is being installed outdoors we would recommend that you buy a canopied set. This means that you would not need to build an enclosure around it. Generator sets require an air supply that can circulate to cool such components as the engine. There needs to be a continuous circulation of air when the generator is functioning and this may be unlikely in a home built enclosure. FG Wilson canopied sets include proper air cooling systems with louvres that let air circulate around the various components. Poorly designed enclosures can lead to excessive air recirculation or that dust or moisture from rain is drawn into the enclosure causing premature failure(s).

Can a generator set be used during adverse weather conditions?
FG Wilson generator sets are designed to function in hostile environments and during extreme weather conditions. To extend the life of a generator and to prevent such things as shorting and rusting, if possible they should be protected from the elements as much as possible.


When and how do I service and maintain my generator set?
The frequency and type of service required to maintain an FG Wilson generator set will depend on a number of things including the usage of the generator, the environment that it operates in and the percentage load that it carries. Ensuring that a full service is carried out regularly is the responsibility of you as the owner. You will need to carry out frequent visual inspections every two to three months to check that things are functioning – please contact us for any faults or repairs that you note.

A full service including a change of such things as filters and lubricating oil should be carried out every twelve months or 400 running hours (which ever occurs soonest). Most failures to start-up are the result of the set not having been regularly tested. We recommend that you check your generator once a week.

What is the warranty cover on generator sets?
Generator warranties vary depending on the manufacturer. All FG Wilson generator sets for standby use are supplied with a two year Warranty (limited to 500 hours of usage per annum from date of start up).

Where can I get warranty work done on my generator set?
Progress Group’s service engineers will carry out warranty work. We should be able to carry out any warranty work required.

Where can I get parts for my generator set?
If you buy or own an FG Wilson generator set you will be able to purchase any spare parts you require by contacting our parts division. We carry a wide range of parts for our generator sets and should be able to provide you with any items you need.

What is the RPM value?
RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute and refers to the number of times that an engine rotates each minute. A generator with a RPM of 3000 therefore runs at twice the speed of a generator with a RPM of 1500. When a generator has a four pole alternator and a frequency of 50 Hz, 1500 RPM is the usual speed and when there is a frequency of 60 Hz, 1800 RPM is the usual speed.

What happens if I overload a generator?
Generator sets should not be overloaded once running, but are designed to take an overload condition for a very short time during start up of the set. If a set is running for long periods of time with an overload condition (that is a rating above the maximum rating of the set) various things may occur.

These include such things as:

Overheating of the coolant system
Overheating of the alternator windings
Oil viscosity (thickness) break down resulting in low oil pressure
A shortening of the working life of the generator

What happens if I underload a generator?
All engines are designed to operate under varying load, ranging from the maximum down to the minimum. Problems occur when light loading (min load) is sustained for long periods of time resulting in the engine not getting up to its normal temperature. Oil in the cylinder that is normally burnt is heated and a lacquer is formed on the cylinder liner. If the light loading continues, visible blue smoke will appear and the engine will require service work to deglaze the liner or replace it.

Perkins’ investment in UK manufacturing goes on show

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson officially opened the first section of Perkins’ £30 Million crankshaft machining centre when he visited the company’s headquarters on Friday October 12.

Operations director Allan Arnott was delighted that Mr Jackson was able to open the first section of the crank line during Perkins’ 75th anniversary year.

“Perkins’ commitment and investment in this crankshaft machining centre will ensure a stronger future for employees and continue to build on our entrepreneurial heritage as an innovative diesel engine manufacturer,” stated Mr Arnott.

The world-class, global crankshaft machining centre begins production in 2008 producing over a quarter of a million crankshafts a year when at full capacity.

“With the challenges faced by many British engineering companies over the last few years it’s great to be able to show our commitment to continue manufacturing in the UK,” added Mr Arnott.

Through the deployment of highly automated benchmark technology, the new state of the art facility will increase crankshaft manufacturing capacity by 100 per cent and represents a step change in machining operations at Peterborough.

The new facility brings with it significant safety and environmental benefits. For example the complete elimination of heat treatment process will decrease energy consumption. Using leading edge technology it will deliver higher speed processes while extending tooling life. Smart supply chain performance also delivers lower freight costs.

The facility will give Perkins’ customers the best delivered quality yet and will help the company achieve a flexible world class solution which will be the industry benchmark for crankshaft technology and automation in the world.

As well as opening the first section of the crankshaft machining line Mr Jackson was shown some of the latest innovations and investments around the Eastfield site.

Perkins Engines Great Eastern Run

Thousands of people from across the UK and further afield descended on Peterborough on Sunday October 14 to make this year’s Great Eastern Run (GER) the most successful in the race’s history.

After months of training more than 3,000 runners took part in the Perkins sponsored Great Eastern Run half marathon, while a further 1,000 completed the 5km fun run.

Families, friends and local residents turned out along the 13.1 mile course to cheer on the runners as they pounded the streets of Peterborough to raise thousands of pounds for local charities.

For the second time in the event’s history there were joint winners in the men’s race. Kenyan athlete and defending champion John Mutai, and his nephew Raymond Tonui crossed the line together in a time of 63 minutes and 48 seconds, more than three minutes clear of Neil Addison in third.

Mutai, 41, said of the GER: “I really enjoyed the race. I love this event because everyone is so friendly and they cheer you on. I love to run and I'm looking forward to coming back to Peterborough and racing here again in 2008.”

In the women’s event Jo Wilkinson finished the course in a time of 74 minutes and 32 seconds and claimed the GER was better than the Great North Run.

The 34 year old former Commonwealth Games representative said: “It’s such a fast course and a great race.”

Banuelia Katesigwa came home in second place with a time of 77 minutes and 42 seconds, while third was awarded to Emma Phillips who crossed the line three seconds later.

It was the brave efforts of the amateur runners which earned the biggest cheers. This year more than 20 Perkins runners completed the arduous event in aid of Sue Ryder Care, Leukaemia Research and the Stroke Association among others.

Speaking after the event, Allan Arnott, operations director at Perkins said: "This year's Great Eastern Run was absolutely superb. The level of support and enthusiasm from both the runners and the crowds, who turned out in their thousands to watch the event, was incredible. I would like to congratulate all those who took part and helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities."
As well as the half marathon there was a phenomenal turn out for the 5km fun run. Entrants, raising money for a variety of local charities, dressed in fancy dress to complete the city centre course. Costumes included St Trinian outfits, ice hockey kits and one fun runner even dressed as a duck.

Both the half-marathon and the fun run will have helped to raise more than £250,000 for local charities.

Perkins Engines to manufacture in China


Plans to build a new manufacturing facility in China to produce small to medium size diesel engines, were announced by Perkins at the Chinese construction exhibition Bices, in Beijing.

Perkins president, Hans Haefeli said the company’s manufacturing facility in Wuxi, in the Jiangsu province, would initially produce the Perkins 400 Series, a range of three and four cylinder, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated and turbo-charged indirect-injection engines.

“This new facility will make the 400 Series engines more readily available for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with operations in China and the Asia Pacific region,” stated Mr Haefeli, who explained that the plant would be operated by the Perkins Shibaura joint venture.

He continued: “There is no doubt that the Chinese market represents a fantastic opportunity for us, as we look to further grow sales of our engines and parts business and re-establish and reinvigorate the Perkins brand in China.

“The building of this plant demonstrates our commitment to China and the continued success of Perkins’ small and medium engine business. Our ambition is to be the natural choice for Chinese equipment manufacturers. We will also continue to supply our current global customers who wish to grow their business from a Chinese manufacturing base.”

Mr Haefeli stressed the importance of providing Chinese OEMs with cost effective, high performance, quality engines backed by Perkins’ world-class service and support network.

Perkins has already appointed three distributors; Elco Power Systems in Hong Kong, Lei Shin Hong in Shanghai and Westrac in Beijing. Through these distributors Perkins’ Chinese customers will have access to the same high levels of service already provided throughout the world.

Phase one of production will be the compact 400 Series engine, which is expected to start rolling off the production line in September 2008. Later phases will focus on the production of medium size diesel engines, such as Perkins’ 1100 Series.

When the manufacturing facilities in Wuxi are fully operational, there will be a capacity to build more than 100,000 engines per year.

Speaking at Bices, Michael Wright, managing director of Perkins Shibaura Engines Limited said: “We are extremely pleased to be bringing our business to China and look forward to working with our customers and continuing the successful growth of the 400 Series business. The 400 Series facility will be a world-class manufacturing operation.”

With demand for compact machinery growing, especially in the construction market, an increasing number of equipment manufacturers are adopting the 400 Series as their engine of choice. There are currently more than 200 different applications in the agriculture, construction and material handling sectors among others, using the engine to provide power and reliability.

Although the latest emissions legislation in Europe and North America does not come into force until 2008 Perkins will be building diesel engines for existing Chinese OEM customers and targeting new OEMs who furnish local and export overseas markets.

But, a major storm that might wipe out power to an area cannot be foreseen in advance. Windstorms or even a car accident, where a car or truck goes off the road and strikes a power pole, could lead to major power outages. Even a pesky squirrel can kill the power if they put front and back paws on two opposing power lines; yes, it has happened before. While you may understand these things can happen, a Telco's customers who are relying on those towers will not always be so forgiving, when they need to make a call and cannot get a signal.

That means telecommunication companies must make some tough decisions; do they risk the outrage of customers who were unable to make a call when they needed to, letters of complaint and frustrated calls to call centers, and possibly losing a few customers, or do they find a way to back up the power supply for their cell towers and, in turn, their network?

For most telecom executives, this is a question remarkably easy to answer. They are going to make an effort to set up a reliable back up power supply and find a way of doing it that is both efficient and affordable. Some companies prefer to go with new diesel power gensets, but others find used power generation equipment to be the best value for their growing company.

Making Haste with Waste

One of the major sources of biomass is waste, in all its organic form and splendor. Our society has away of producing tons and tons of waste in all possible forms and anything organic in that waste tumbling out of our garbage bags. Biogas is important simply because we are out to set this waste into something remarkably important like energy, power or heat. Getting something out of nothing magnified a million times and being put a price on.

For instance, the Australian economy has a good start with the sugar industry throwing light on leading the way, the biogas lit way. The residual fiber out of sugar production is burnt called bagasse, which is utilized to create steam which could, in turn be used to work the machines to generate electricity. We take electricity for granted in our homes because we don't have to do anything to get it, with the exception of paying our monthly electric bill. This is part of the problem with RV generators, we expect the electricity to be there when we need or want it just like in our house. The problem is this magical source of electricity requires a certain amount of care and maintenance from the owner.

Safety first! Always keep in mind when you use a generator there is carbon monoxide. You should always inspect the exhaust system on the generator set before using it. Do not operate a generator with a damaged exhaust system. If you're using a portable generator set make sure the exhaust is directed away from the camping area. Test your carbon monoxide detector for proper operation prior to using the generator. Never run a generator when you or anyone else is sleeping. Observe campground etiquette. Do not run your generator after quiet hours.

A generator that comes equipped on an RV gets its fuel supply from the same fuel tank the engine uses. When the fuel tank reaches a 1/4 tank of fuel the generator will shut down to prevent you from possibly using all of the fuel without realizing it. The generator will either have an automatic transfer switch to sense whether you are using shore power or the generator, or you will need to plug the RV power cord into a generator receptacle to use the generator. It is perfectly okay to use the generator while you are traveling.

This is one of the reasons you have a generator in the first place. It is actually more fuel efficient to run the generator with the roof mounted air conditioner on, than to use the dash air.

Generators - A Guide to Purchasing

The diesel generator produces electric energy using the combination of an electrical generator and a diesel engine.

Ships often use diesel generators, to power the electric system and to propel the ship. Wherever the electrical grid is unstable, a diesel generator is used as a back up during supply failure. Even with the best alternative system such as solar energy or wind energy, sometimes the weather may not cooperate and land us in darkness when the main power source fails. To keep our power system running, a backup engine generator may be just the thing. For businesses with sensitive computer networks, or homes with critical medical equipment, a back up power system such as a diesel generator may be necessary even when grid power is available.

The intended power load and the ability to supply the same is the basis for the selection of diesel generators.

High quality gasoline generators and diesel generators will provide reliable backup power to small offices and most homes. When you have a good backup generator sized to support your important electrical equipment and power systems then you need not bother or worry when there is a major supply failure.

Diesel generators can be switched on or off unlike other alternative power sources so there are no need for a dedicated charge controller. The generator can be connected to the main power system through an inverter using the generator’s auto-start feature. Alternatively, it can also be connected to the generator auto-start battery charger.

When buying a diesel generator make a list of the lights and equipment that will be running off the generator. Total the wattage requirements to determine the capacity of the generator. Compare wattage requirement and the price of the generator. If the generator is to be connected directly to the electrical system, then it is advisable to hire a qualified technician to install the transfer switch. Ensure that the generator has adequate storage capacity, longer usage time at a stretch, overload protection and auto shut off facility.
