How Can You Get Maximum From Your Portable Generator

Your portable generator is your only refuge in the case of a power-cut, when there is a great need to keep thing moving and working. To be used as a temporary source of power for emergency after calamity – like, hurricane or tornado - portable generator is a popular option. In such cases, if there is a need for rescue and retrieval, especially during the night, the portable generator can keep machines and lights going for the purpose.
A matter of concern when it comes to a portable generator is that it can be a health hazard to people, if not used properly, more details are located at Hondageneratorstore website. Hence, it is the responsibility of the users to use portable generators in the right way.
Chiefly, there are four main hazards that portable generators can impose:
i) Release of carbon monoxide from the generator’s exhaust
ii) Fires due to improper refueling
iii) Electrocution or shocks due to wrong connections
iv) Loud noise and vibration.
Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas. Its undetectable nature makes it all the more dangerous, as it can lead to death due to suffocation. It is unlike other gases – being colorless and odorless – that it why it is impossible to sense.
Keep your portable generator in places where there is proper ventilation, so as to avoid poisoning due to carbon monoxide. Closed spaces - like a room, basement, or garage – are a complete ‘rule out’, when it comes to placement of portable generator also check out all safety precautions at hondageneratorstore. So are places like windows, doors, or any kind of openings in the house. If you run the generator indoors, keep in mind that open windows or doors are no guarantee or safety against carbon monoxide build up. In fact, the harmful effects of carbon monoxide can also enter open doors or windows, even if the generator is run outdoors. If anyone experiences symptoms like giddiness, nausea, headache and fatigue, take the person to an open area where he can get fresh air.
Generators, like car engines, get hot when their engines run for a long time, get more details at hondageneratorstore.com But unlike car engines, generators remain hot for a long period of time, making it impossible for you to refuel them, while running or immediately after they are shut down. The generator needs to be cooled down for a while. Once the temperature is safely low, refueling can be done. Fire can also occur, even before your intention to start refueling it, particularly if your gasoline containers are placed near or beside the generator.
Generators should be considered as ordinary power sources. Since generators do not have safety devices - like circuit breakers and transformers - they can cause harm, more so in case you happen to get electrocuted. Keep every connection clear and clean, to ensure the safety of everyone around. Avoid unnecessary and unsafe connections, as well as tangling ones. Keep the generator dry, as under no condition should you let it work in the rain. In case it starts raining, use a canopy to cover the generator. Don’t ever attempt to connect any devices when you are barefooted. And under no circumstances should you connect wet electric devices to the generator.

More Details about green electricity here.

Your cottage, farm or even city home can be lighted with electricity generated by the wind.Even if you are far from a power line you need not be without power.Wind power is also one of the green forms of energy generation which does no harm to our environment. It is in fact probably the cleanest form of power generation which can be harnessed at reasonable cost.Solar energy is also very "clean" but solar panels are costly and have low power output.

Commercially made wind power plants are available but are quite costly. The simple solution to this problem is to build your own wind power generator. If you have room on your property you could build several units for the price of one commercial unit.Any excess power which you generate can be sold to your power company in many areas now.

This wind power generator which can be built from plans is the lowest cost unit which you will find anywhere. Our review of the others shows that they cost much more. This machine is built from new or used auto parts and a few odds and ends.It generates as much power as the more expensive alternatives.Building one of these generators is also much simpler. It is very reliable and will work for years with only routine servicing.

Some people think that you need to have powerful winds blowing most of the time to generate much electric power.Nothing could be further from the truth.Light winds or breezes do generate power which you can store in storage batteries.

Wind power was very popular in the 1930 to 1950 period. It was used by many people to generate power or to pump water from a well.People were very cost concious in those harder times. At present in these times of abundance most people do not feel it necessary to keep costs to a minimum and will happily pay the power company for ther needs every month.

A new age of wind power is now upon us when the necessity is to produce "green" power which does no harm to our environment. Many areas in the USA and elsewhere now have large scale wind power generation plants in operation and many more are scheduled to be built.

Small wind turbine generators are the shape of things to come. Many consumers are now installing them to generate at least part of the power they consume. If power lines are distant from your residence generating your own power is the only way to supply your needs.

The average home workshopper can easily build a wind power generator using just simple tools and used auto parts. It will turn out as much power as an expensive commercial wind turbine. You can build several for the cost of one commercial model. If you generate more power than you use you can sell it to the power company in many areas. Now is the time to build your own wind power turbine genretrator.

Finding the Right Generator for Your Camping Needs

By: Brian Jenkins

While some like to rough it for a few days, other camping aficionados prefer to have a generator around to power a few choice items for the camp. There are a wide variety of generators on the market, and each is designed with different purposes in mind.
A basic generator uses a motor to generate energy without a power source. Campers shopping for one should verse themselves in generator terminology and determine what they are going to use the generator for before they go shopping. The wrong choice can leave one with too little power and a ruined camping trip.
Uses
Generators for use with gear and a tent may differ from those for use with an RV. For one, the appliances inside an RV are likely to need much more power than typical camping equipment. Many RVs have house batteries that are charged before the trip and are used to provide power while on the road. A generator would be able to provide extra power when the house battery is off or dead. Some RV owners mistake a generator for a battery charger. Although a generator can send power to the house battery, they are almost never recommended for this purpose. There are specialized devices for that purpose. There are many accessories available that can help an RV owner mount the generator and connect it directly into the power system.
Using a portable generating for camping without a vehicle is somewhat different. The machine will probably need to provide less power and be easier to move. Tent campers often use these devices to power lights for camp protection, cook, or run small electronics. Those planning to run sensitive equipment like a laptop or printer should buy a generator that is rated for that purpose. Some generators may sputter or surge, and this can cause damage to more sensitive machines.
Power
Before purchasing a generator, make a list of all of the machines it will need to power at the same time. Now add up the running wattage of each of them. Certain devices have startup wattage in addition to a running wattage. This is the amount of power that it will use as it warms up and will need to be added too. The total is the minimum amount of power the generator should be rated for.
This aspect of shopping may be a little confusing. A hardware salesman can help decide which generator will meet the needs of the camping trip.
Starter
A portable can have an electric starter, a manual starter, or some combination of the two. The manual start will most likely be a pull-start like those found on gasoline lawnmowers. An electric starter allows the user to turn on the generator by simply pressing a button.
Fuel
Camping and RV generators can run on diesel, gasoline, or even propane. Gasoline is most common for smaller models. Since it runs on combustible fuel, the generator produces heat and exhaust. It can only be used outdoors. It is a good idea to learn about how much power a full fuel tank can provide. Extra fuel can be brought along on the trip, but always remember to store and transport it properly.
Using a Generator
After purchasing the generator, its time to setup camp. Make sure to read all of the documentation for the product and follow directions. There are a few things to consider about generators before starting one up near camp:

  • They are loud. Some are louder than others depending on their fuel, design, and motor. Set the generator up far enough away so it does not make the campsite unpleasant.
  • They have exhaust. Never cover a generator or use it indoors. They should be kept well ventilated at all times. The exhaust contains harmful carbon monoxide.
  • They get hot. It is best not to lay anything on them or near them. Keep flammable substances, including the fuel, far away.
  • They have a warm-up period. It is usually better to let a generator warm up before using it. This period can vary from models to model, but should be listed in the manual. It should not be turned off before it has warmed up.
  • They can overload. Never overload the generator. This can damage the generator and all of the appliances connected to it. It is best to prioritize the power usage and wait.

A portable generator can be a useful tool for a camping trip, be aware of its safety rules. When used properly, it can make the whole experience more fun.

Factors to consider if you install a generator for your home
Submitted by: Michael Del Greco, New Jersey Home Inspector Lic GI 0121, President of Accurate Inspections, Inc, a New Jersey home inspection company
Use of Portable Generators
Some people use emergency generators to provide back-up power. While generators can be used in a safe manner, improper use of a generator can pose significant hazards to you and your family. Hazards include electric shock, carbon monoxide poisoning, explosion and fire.
Prevention of Electrical Shock
It is extremely important to insure that your generator does not feed electricity back into the power distribution system. You should consult with a qualified electrician to insure that your generator installation is safe.
Since the generator must be operated outside your home, it is important for it to be equipped with a ground fault interrupter.
Only use grounded type extension cords that have the rated capacity to handle the given electrical load.
Inspect all extension cords prior to use and never use a damaged cord.
Do not run extension cords through water or across wet surfaces.
Prevention of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
You cannot see, smell or taste carbon monoxide (CO), but at high levels it can kill a person within minutes. Carbon monoxide is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal is burned. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning. At moderate levels you or your family can get severe headaches, become dizzy, mentally confused, nauseated, or faint. Low levels can cause shortness of breath, mild nausea, and mild headaches. Since many of these symptoms are similar to those of the flu, food poisoning, or other illnesses, you may not think that CO poisoning could be the cause. Never operate a generator in an enclosed place including your garage or near an open door or window.
Gasoline safety tips
Always store gasoline in containers approved for the storage of gasoline.
Never store gasoline in your home. Keep it in a detached garage or tool shed.
Never fill your generator when it is running or when it is hot. Wait until it is cool before filling.
Always refuel your generator outside away from any source of ignition.
When refilling gasoline cans, always place the cans on the ground. Never fill a can that is in the bed of a truck or in a vehicle.
Never transport gasoline in the trunk of your car.
Only store a reasonable amount of gasoline. The maximum quantity of gasoline stored should not exceed (10) gallons.
Hazards of Gasoline
Gasoline vapors burn not the liquid.
Gasoline will produce sufficient vapors to burn at any temperature above 44o Fahrenheit.
The vapors are heavier than air and can travel a considerable distance before finding an ignition source.
Static electricity will ignite gasoline vapors.
Gasoline is lighter than water. Using water on a gasoline fire will spread the fire.
Gasoline is poisonous and can be fatal if swallowed

A Look at the Honda EU1000i Generator

Author: Wildfire Marketing Group Content Development Team

Honda Generators has come up with what they claim a super quiet generator model, the EU1000i. This model has become the official generator of several events, like the Daytona International Speedway Race, the 2005 Air Venture in Oshkosh, and the Albuquerque Fiesta Celebration among others.
The Honda EU1000i is an inverter-type generator. An inverter has the ability to power up several appliances at the same time on a stable power output. It is safe to run a personal computer with this generator series.
This model is best used outdoors. Activities like picnics and camping are ideal applications. With this device, your outdoor activities will never be the same again. You will now have stand-in power to run electric devices and light up the recreation area. Going outside will be as comfortable as being indoors.
This model is also powerful enough to be your standby power at home. For those areas where power failures are frequent, the EU1000i will be the excellent solution to that. This small, easy to carry generator has 1000 watts of power readily available for you to make your home appliances function even if your electric power is out.
This super quiet generator has a single cylinder 1.8 HP engine with a displacement of 50 cc. Voltage input is 120 Volts and voltage output is at 12 Volts. It has recoil as its starting system. Its fuel tank can hold 0.6 gallons of gasoline which runs for 3.8 hours on rated load and 8.3 hours if run on load capacity. It is 17.7 inches long, 9.4 inches wide and 15 inches tall, with a dry weight of 29 pounds. Since it is super quiet, it only produces 59 dB of noise running on rated load and 53 dB when on load.
The EU1000i has advanced features and benefits that make it a notch above the competition. Honda has integrated into this model an overhead valve engine that is easy-starting and reliable while meeting emission standards. This model is very compact and lightweight and can be carried around in one hand. This is the reason why this model is recommended for outdoor use.
For enhanced customer experience, Honda has incorporated a chipset that takes the power of the generator and converts it to an ultra-clean power that is way better than the common household power quality.
Honda boasts that this model also has low fuel consumption compared to others. Consumers will save a lot with this generator. This is because of the high-efficiency motor they use in this model to automatically control the engine's speed matching the power needs of the devices connected to it.
This is made possible by Honda's Eco Throttle System. This is the system effectively lowers the generator's fuel consumption. Along with lower fuel consumption, noise is also reduced, and exhaust emissions are minimized to comply with government standards.
Honda also has introduced parallel operation of generators. This means that two generators can combine energies together. This is like using two batteries together for added voltage and longer life.
Like all other Honda generators, the EU1000i is also equipped with an Oil Alert System that causes the engine to automatically shut down once the oil reaches a critical level. Consequently, this prevents further damages on the engine and possible overheating. Another thing common to all Honda generators is the USDA-Qualified Spark Arrestor/Muffler. This simple device aids in the prevention of fires.
Other features of the EU1000i model include the electronic ignition system, the capability to be used either with alternating current or direct current, the switch controls for engine and fuel and valve on and off, and the fully enclosed packaging to add to its quiet operation.
The EU1000i can be bought with enhancements like the water resistant storage cover to protect the generator, the DC charging cord that enables the generator to be charged with a 12 volt battery, and parallel cables to connect this model to another similar system to combine power.
The EU1000i comes with a 2-year warranty if used in homes and one year if used commercially. Upon purchase, a user's manual is included to guide its users. The model usually comes in red color and costs about USD $789.95.
For your safety, always take time to read the manual and follow the safety precautions including the proper way of using the equipment. Honda ensures the ease of handling of this generator. However, end users are responsible for any misuse. Consumers are advised not to place this generator in an enclosed area. All generators need proper ventilation and a minimum of 4 feet spacing on its four sides. It is also advised to place the generator away from the home or building's window as the exhaust coming from it could enter those.
The EU1000i generator is ideal for home and industrial use. It is dependable, and managing it is uncomplicated. This model is highly recommended. So for your alternative power source, you now know which one to get.

Get A Wind Power Turbine Generator--Preserve Our Environment

Get A Wind Power Turbine Generator--Preserve Our Environment

Wind turbine power is the wave of the future.Clean, free and abundant it is by far the best alternative energy form. You can make a difference to our environment, while saving money to boot,by harnessing wind power to generate all or part of your electricity supply.Generate electricity from the wind with your own small wind turbine. You can buy them from many sources now or save a lot of money by building your own wind turbine power generator.

From the 1930s through the 1950s small wind power generators were common on farms.Wind power was also used for such jobs as pumping water from wells. In those days people were much more inclined to save money in this way than we are today. Since then with increasing prosperity and little care for the environment we rely almost  completely on the power company to supply our electric power.

In the 21st century attitudes,of necessity, are changing. We have become aware that we must reduce our impact on the environment or face increasing problems in the years ahead. Many are now looking for alternative energy sources. The most viable alternatives are wind power or solar panels.Solar panels are however expensive and produce limited amounts of power. They have a place in some applications but are presently too expensive for general use as a power supply.

Wind power turbines are now in use to supply all or part of the power supply for many cities all over the world including the USA.They supply "green" power at a cost competitive  to conventional power generating facilities. On a smaller scale many individuals are now producing all or part of their electric power needs with their own wind turbine power generator.

Small wind turbines for private use are now available from many sources. They can be mounted on a rooftop or on a small tower or pole. They are however quite expensive.A better solution than buying a wind power generator is to build your own which can be done at quite low cost.Plans are available for building a wind generator  using new or used auto parts.Any home handyman who can use simple tools can build a wind turbine which will supply part of the power needs of an average household.Several of them can be used to supply nearly all the power requirements for a home. The power is stored in storage batteries till needed.

Power companies in many areas now will buy any excess power which you generate. When you are at work or away from home any excess power which you generate from your wind generators will earn you money. You will not only be helping to preserve our environment but making money into the bargain. It doesn't get any better than that

Build your own wind turbine,or if you don't mind the cost, buy one.You will be doing both mother earth and yourself a favor.A wind power generator will save you money and reduce your impact on our climate.Do it today and be an example to your neighborhood. You can obtain more information by clicking on the URL below.

Electricity Companies in California Want to Raise Prices

By Andy Adams

Electricity provider PG&E have recently made a motion to increase electricity prices in the California area as with the green agenda on everyone's mind these days and people trying to save on their electricity use/carbon footprint/whatever today's buzzword is it is understandable that we are trying to use less energy. However whilst we're trying to cut back on electricity and gas usage it is also becoming more and more scarce at the same time.

It is well known that oil prices have shot up over the past months which you'll have no doubt noticed when visiting the petrol station forecourt over the past six months. Well in some cases in California the same sort of idea is being proposed over gas and electricity prices: Increase the price as supplies draw thin.

The PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) made a plea to state regulators recently to increase utility prices by 6.5% to cover the soaring cost of natural gas that fuels the majority of California's power stations. This proposed increase would be done by increasing electricity bills by 4.5% in October with a further 2% increase set for January.

The rise in electricity bills is a relatively unnoticed issue in the grand scheme of things with Petrol, Oil and Diesel taking centre stage in the high priced fuel crisis. Natural Gas itself has increased in cost by 63% compared to this time last year. Problems with power have worsened due to a poor performance from the hydroelectric power in the Sierra Mountains. The mountains are home to a number of Hydro-electric dams which have had less significance due to a thin snow cap this year, possible another casualty of global warming?

Natural gas has been popular in generating electricity as it burns cleaner than coal which has slowly been phased out. Whilst opponents to the recent motion have acknowledged gas prices have increased they aren't too happy considering that PG&E has already applied to increase rates earlier in the year too. It seems that with Oil, Gas, Electricity and all other fuel sources increasing in cost we should look to conserve as much as possible to try and lower our bills and damage to the environment too.

With many different gas suppliers now charging more it may be worth looking elsewhere for a cheaper deal. One such step could be consolidating your gas and electricity suppliers so you get your energy all from one company. If you have any concerns about your gas and electricity suppliers then contact them and see if these changes affect you.

RV Generator Buying Tips

By: Jason Uvios

So you have always dreamt of hitting the road with full gusto and revel in the wilderness along with your latest model recreational vehicle! Hitting the road with your RV is a good idea indeed, but the RV trips become even more enjoyable, if you carry a good source of electrical power right with you. Otherwise how will you be able to quench your thirst for chilled beer in the middle of Alpine forest, or how will you be able to taste the freshly grilled fishes that you have just caught from the stream! On the other hand, if you have enough supply of electricity to power your mini freezer or microwave, you will get comforts of your home even if you are in the boondocks!
So you have to ensure the supply of power wherever your RV takes you. For that you have to invest in a RV generator. This could be your trusted friend all through out your exciting excursion on wilderness. The RV generator as the stable source of power will definitely add another feather to your standard recreational vehicle configurations.
Let's discuss about the unique features of RV generators.
- RV class generators are specially designed to provide you uninterrupted power supply while you are in the remote corners of wilderness, where you can find no source of power. A standard RV generator comes with approximately three times greater horse power (HP) than ordinary generators. Thus a RV generator is characterized by low fuel consumption with high energy output.
- At the same time an RV class generator runs at a lower speed. As such they run with minimum noise and allow you to enjoy the quiet and solitude of camp life.
- Moreover, the construction of the RV generator allows it to run continuously for hours to fulfill the unique power requirements of avid campers and RV-travelers.
When you are going to buy an RV generator, keep the following points in mind.
- Most of the camping spots put some noise restriction. So when you are buying your unit, make sure it meets standards of noise restrictions. The generators making noise beyond that will not be able to serve your purpose properly.
- So far as RV generators are concerned, try to stick to brand names. This way you will be able to get advanced features with your generator set. Make sure the unit comes with such features as electric start and electric fuel pump. In addition to that, never settle on any model that lacks the safety mechanisms like automatic fuel safety and high oil pressure shutoff.
- Honda and Onan RV Generators are two globally respected brands which are distinguished for their reliability, sturdy construction and user friendliness.
- Whichever brand or model of RV generator you choose take special note of the warranty features and maintenance support.

What to look for in a portable electric generator

By: Craig Elliott

Portable electric generators are used in several different manors including being used to power homes and businesses during power outages and powering various items used for outdoor activities. When looking to purchase an electric generator there is many variables to be considered b the buyer. With the cost of a quality generator ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, knowing which mode and type to buy will save the consumer a lot of hard earned money. The following advice will allow the consumer to make a smart and well-informed decision as to which portable electronic generator will be the best to handle their individual needs.
When you decide that you are in the market for a portable electronic generator you should make a list of all the electronic devices that will need to be powered by the generator. You will need to take into account the wattage required to start the items and the wattage needed to run the items. These numbers tend to vary greatly based upon what your generator will be powering. The amount of wattage needed to run a product or appliance can be found on the appliance nameplate or on the electrical cord itself. Starting wattage is crucially important for compressors, motors, and pumps, and is typically two to seven times the running wattage of the item. The starting wattage of a central air-conditioning unit and the smallest available heat pumps will be greater than ten thousand watts, which is far greater than the capacity of even the most powerful portable electric generators. To determine what size of a generator you will need, you will, first have to decide what essential equipment will need to powered and which larger appliance can be cycled on and off. It may be more cost effective to rotate the powering of equipment in order to reduce the size of a portable generator needed.
Shopping for a portable electric generator is a lot like shopping for a new car. The body and engine of the unit are included in the base price, but most of the essential and desirable features for the generator to go way up. Determining where and how you will use your generator will help you in deciding which of these pricey features you will need to purchase and include in the cost of the unit when doing the final comparison between models.
If you are looking to use your generator on a long term basis and are looking for it to be quiet and efficient you may look into purchasing an overhead valve engine for your generator. You may also look into a model that is capable of handling pressurized lubrication which will also prolong the life of the engine. The cost of these two features could raise the overall price of your generator more than two hundred dollars. If your needs require you to run your generator for long periods of time, you may want to look for models that have features that conserve fuel.
Some models can be purchased for about fifty more dollars and are equipped with larger than normal gas tanks. Many of these gas tanks are designed to hold five or more gallons than most generators which will allow your unit to run 12 to 18 hours more than average units. A generator that is equipped with an idle control feature will not only reduce the noise level of the generator but will allow the generator to run at less than full power during periods where less power is needed. This greatly increases your fuel economy and may allow your generator to run up to 18 hours longer than models that are not equipped with an auto idle feature.
A low oil shutdown feature is well worth the approximate thirty five-dollar increase in some generators price. It will automatically shut down the generator should the engine’s oil level fall below a predetermined level. This feature will prevent the engine from running without enough oil to keep it lubricated and will prevent the engine from being damaged. A low oil shutdown feature also increases the life of your generator and should be taken into account for consumers looking to use their generators for many years.
A final feature that may be the most important to some buyers and doesn’t increase the overall price of a generator too drastically is a wheel kit. This wheel kit allows the unit, which usually weighs more than one hundred pounds, to be portable and moved to wherever it may be needed. This feature would be especially attractive to those looking to use their generator for outdoor purposes such as camping or tailgating.
When making an investment like buying a portable electric generator, consumers should be well prepared and knowledgeable about what they need and are looking for. They should only purchase a generator that is the right size for their needs. They should also look into any special features they feel like they would need and be sure to include the costs of these features when doing price comparisons.

How to Determine Generator Size

By:Jason Uvios

Buying a generator is a mind boggling decision. Which fuel is to be used to what type of generator is required for your unique needs all are the questions that must be assessed carefully prior to the purchase. But determining the exact size of the generator seems to be most difficult.
There are a range of confusing factors and considerations that must be kept in mind at the time of determining the size of generator to get.
But you might ask, why should I know the size of the generator? Knowing the proper size of the generator is important because it should supply you the right wattage of electricity. What is the right wattage? Right wattage refers to just enough power to operate all your essential appliances. Too little wattage makes the generator overwork and this damages both the generator and the appliance. If the wattage is greater than required, you waste costly fuel to run it and also waste money on the initial purchase as the generators with greater wattage cost more.
Now how can you determine the right wattage? You can do it through a very simple device called ammeter. An ammeter will help you to know exactly how much watts of electricity a particular electrical device at your home is consuming. Now add up the watts of each item which you plan to power by the generator. This will give you the idea about the total wattage required by your generator.
You can work out the required wattage in a different way. You will find in the manuals or faceplates the power requirement of the appliances. In most of the cases they are given as the Amps at a given voltage. Now in order to get the wattage, simply multiply the amps and voltage.
Sometimes dealers tend to give you a vague idea about the required wattage on the basis of the square feet area of your home. But it is a wrong approach and never purchase a generator without measuring up the total wattage required by all the appliances you want to power with the generator.
Also check what kind of electrical equipments you plan to run with the generator. The appliances like refrigerator, air conditioner, pump etc requires almost three times more electricity to start up than running. Because of this start up feature your generator needs to supply more power. You must consider this point at the time of calculating wattage. So it is also important to calculate the difference between the running load and startup load. This number has to be added again to the running load of all the appliances to get the actual wattage requirement.
Now that you have got the wattage requirement, buy the generator with a rated capacity of around 20% more than that number. This will prevent your generator from overworking, you will be able to power few more small devices and it will also add to the longevity of the generator.

Basics Of Electricity

By:Jason Uvios

Since generators (We are going to discussing about a whole lot of them!), are primarily used to generate electricity, it is imperative that we understand a few basics of electricity itself. It has been known that electrical sciences has had many students faint and the complicated wiring diagrams you must have seen sometimes would not have made you feel great about it. For the sake of simplicity let us obviate the jargon and handle it with a common man's language.
Electric currents are a result of microscopic elements called electrons (which are essentially a part of an atom, a basic element to all known matter) , flowing together from one end of a conductor - any material capable of allowing such electrons to flow, to another. You would typically know when this happens, while you hold on to a poorly insulated conductor, which results in shock. The reason why this happens is because the electrons flowing in that conductor have utilized your hand as a conductor too and started flowing through it and hence kicks in the importance of proper safety and insulation for the conductors.
Now coming to the flowing part, the electrons can only move from one end of the conductor to the other, only when there is enough potential for it to do so, something akin to water being able to flow from a point higher in space than the point where it ought to flow to. The amount of electrons which have been initiated to flow from one end of the conductor will determine what they can do, or much current can be produced at the other end of the conductor. The current flowing is measured in Amperages (Amps) and the potential generated between the two ends of the conductor is called Voltage, measured in Volts.
A large amount of voltage and current (Amperage) can kill you or knock you off, just as water rushing from a great height towards you could have. That aside, it is also important to know what the current coming out of the end of conductor has to do. The power that ought to be generated is measured in Wattages (Watt -hours). For example, a 100 watt bulb burning for an hour would consume 100 Watts power.
If you had to know how much electric power a device might end up using, we just have to calculate the Amperes times Voltage to get to the Wattage.
A little knowledge about electricity you must have gained now will help in understand how different generators produce the electric currents in different ways.

Types of Generators

By:Jason Uvios

Generators are used for the generation of electricity and they ensure that most of the essential appliances can be run whenever there is a power outage. Generators of different wattage capacities can be used according to the needs of the individual. The choice of buying the right type of generator depends upon a number of factors like the wattage capacity, voltage ratings, fuel type, fuel efficiency, noise level, portability and price - a prudent choice can only be made if you knew what to look for.
Stand By
- Standby generators provide backup power in homes and offices and are permanently installed outside the house or office building. They are plugged into the electric circuits or home wiring.
- The unit turns itself on and off automatically. They can automatically detect disruption in the usual electric supply and begin supplying power within a few seconds.
- Propane and natural gas offer a safe, long-term fuel supply and are more environment friendly than gasoline or diesel fuels.
- Like any motor, a generator motor creates quite a bit of heat and needs a cooling system to prevent overheating. Standby generators can be either air-cooled or liquid-cooled. The major difference is that air-cooled systems are louder and not quite as effective. Liquid cooled systems are quieter and more dependable - and also more expensive to purchase and to maintain.
Portable
- Portable generators are usually used in places where there is no power supply such as construction sites, camps, etc. These generators are sufficient to run appliances like televisions, refrigerators, sump pumps and furnaces.
- Portable systems are wheeled units that require to roll the generator outside, start it up, and hook it up to a power inlet box Portable generators supply electricity to selected appliances through extension cords.
- They are fueled by gasoline, which can be difficult to store and transport during a blackout. Carbon monoxide is always a concern in the safe use of portable generators.
- They are designed to be used for short periods of time only a few hours at a stretch. As a result, they tend to be much smaller and less expensive.
A related aspect of generator motors is the speed at which they run, as measured in RPMs. Generators made for the US market operate at one of two speeds: 1800 RPM or 3600 RPM. 1800 RPM motors will last longer and run quieter; 3600 RPM motors are smaller and lighter

Solar Cells: Generating Power Out Of Sunlight

By:Jason Uvios

Solar cells are devices that have been designed to tap into the solar energy which is abundant on the surface of the earth during daylight. You would have seen small solar cells at work in your calculators, watches and other such devices and could have observed that some of these contraptions seem to be running on these solar cells alone, forever, as though they never need any other source to derive power from, as along as there is sunlight.
The solar cells we see everyday are also called Photovoltaic cells or modules-usually frames with groups of solar cells tightly packed and arranged in a systematic way. Photovoltaic are special materials which have the ability to convert sunlight into electricity. Hitherto used exclusively for space and related applications, it has now been extended to almost everything from water heaters to automobiles.
Photovoltaic cells are constructed using semiconductor material - materials which have the ability to conduct electric current. Silicon is one of most common materials used. When sunlight hits the solar apparatus, the solar cells absorb the heat and the electrons are let free or kicked out from their lodging places within the atomic structure of the semiconductor material. The electrons duly freed, thus begin to flow leading to an electric current. If two metal plates can be attached to the points of flow, electric current could be drawn out.
Earlier solar cells found use only for generating power for satellites out there in the space. Today, they are here in use for even less exotic applications like solar water heaters, cookers, calculators, watches and a few automobiles too. Solar cells could be used to provide electricity for your home or office too. However, while the operating costs of your power expenditures would come down drastically, you need to be aware that the installation and the solar cell set up itself is outrageously expensive. Since you would be using this power primarily to run your major appliances, you might have to find alternatives.
It is a matter of time before the energy from the sun is harnessed into a full-time energy source that could be used to produce electricity. It is already quite popular, but then, there are a few problems associated with this technology. The heat rays from the sun keep fluctuating and it could be snowing or raining sometimes. The warmer areas on earth are fine, but how do we help the colder areas? The lack of uniformity and reliability on the solar heat rays has remained a challenge for harnessing this technology.

The Engine Generator

By:Jason Uvios

The growing unquenchable thirst for more power in the developed countries and perhaps more in the developing ones has led to constant innovation, a thirst that has never been quenched since the early industrial revolution to the present 21st century. Various contraptions have been designed to satiate this thirst. An engine generator is one of them.
An electric generator and an internet combustion engine assembled together so as to form a single piece of equipment is called as an Engine- Generator or even more colloquially, it is also called as generator set. They have evolved as a complimentary choice or an alternative for the electric generator and utilize the engine for the mechanical rotary force that needs to be developed for producing electricity.
In general, these generator sets also included a fuel reservoir for the engine, an engine speed regulator and also a voltage regulator. Some units also come equipped with a batter and a self-starter notwithstanding a transfer switch which can be used to load or on load the utility source on or off the generator set combination of an electric generator with an internal combustion engine, mounted
Most of the small and portable generators used in the US today are single- phased and there are very few such generators available. However there are quite a few large ones and most of them operate on three-phased models. While selecting a generator for a particular purpose, the generator voltage, frequency and wattage are carefully chosen to suit the load that is about to be connected to the generator.
Engine- generators also come in a plethora of power ratings, ranging from small portable ones which generate a few hundred watts, moving upwards to the hard-carted, slightly larger ones which can produce up to a few thousands and then onto the stationary ones which can purge millions of watts. The smaller ones usually use gasoline as a fuel, while the larger ones can use variety of fuels like gasoline, diesel, natural gas or propane.
While choosing generators for residential or commercial usage, one needs to carefully assess his or her requirements. For sensitive output demanding installations like computers and other such electronic equipment, invertors, which produce clean-sinusoidal wave electrical currents, might be apt. Places where utility power stations are not present might need the portable devices and where permanent installations are required, for example. Hospitals, factories and communication service centers, the large ones are apt.

Fuel Cells: Where Can Hydrogen Be Found

By:Jason Uvios

Hydrogen is the most abundant element found on the surface of the earth. It is also the most suitable fuel for a fuel cell due to its reactivity with the acting chemicals, its clean fuel carrying ability, its richness in energy and high power density, its simplicity and its ease of availability, its ease of manufacturing However, it is never found as hydrogen itself and is usually found in one of its compound forms and has to extracted using suitable processes or devices.
Hydrogen can be found in fossil fuels, biogas, methane, propane, ethanol and many other such compounds. The future is looking for an energy source which is clean, can provide for a lot of energy in an efficient manner is abundantly available. Another interesting aspect is that even the waste product coming out of the process employed by the fuel cell ater, can be used again to extract hydrogen, the process works itself into something like a loop which can go on forever to provide for energy for a long time. This might just be the answer for our never ending search for alternatives for our gas guzzling automobiles and ever draining batteries, a formidable source of clean energy for us in the near future obviating the hovering fear of rapid depletion of a sound and reliable form of energy.
Some problems still abound since hydrogen is still an expensive fuel and scientists are still working on possible ways to commercialize production of hydrogen safely and with enough ease. The most seemingly successful ones they are working now are the following three.
Reformers: Since hydrogen is found only in the form of compounds, through one of its forms of associated like through the fossil fuels, biogas, methane etc. Reformers are used to extract hydrogen through any of its natural forms found aplenty on earth.
Solar and Wind Power Generation: By harnessing the power generated by other renewable sources, like wind, Photovoltaic Cells etc, hydrogen can be produced by electrolyzing water by using the energy derived from the above mentioned energy generators.
Enzymes: Bacteria and algae can also produce hydrogen, albeit slowly. Cyanobacteria, an abundantly found single cell organism produces hydrogen through its normal metabolic function. They can grow anywhere and are even found in water and air.
It is just a matter time before hydrogen can be used as a new age fuel for almost all residential, commercial and industrial purposes, once the fuel cell technology takes off and counters a few bottlenecks it seems to be facing.

Designing an Ocean Wave Hydro Electric Generator Which Can Withstand a 500 Lb Bomb

By Lance Winslow

With all the conflict in the world we must be careful with the infrastructure projects we put into Third World nations. With all the help that the NGOs, world governments and United States of America give we must be realistic with the money we spend and how we spend it. First order of business should not be simply to cure diseases or feed people.

The first order of any human civilization should be clean water that can be used for agriculture, cleanliness and drinking. The next order of business should be proper sewage treatment plants to prevent disease. Next, it makes sense to produce power for the masses and their civilization.

One problem we have seen is when we go in build facilities, infrastructure or teach people to farm; is that wars, terrorism and fighting ruin all that has been built. Therefore on the first three items of business we need to design infrastructure, which can withstand a 500-pound bomb. In other words, we must face reality and be smart about our investments in Third World nations and our goals.

Recently our Online Think Tank ask the question; Can We Build and Design an Ocean Wave Hydro Electric Generator, which can withstand a 500 Lb Bomb. The answer is most likely; No. But we could build a modularized system that can be easily rebuilt as long as parts are available in a very short amount of time. Still the goal in the future should be to build something that is literally bulletproof.

This means just because there is some civil unrest or a war, the infrastructure is still intact. This way things can return to normal very quickly. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Electric Generator and Power Generator Safety Tips

Submitted by: Ann Knapp

When buying a diesel generator make a list of the lights and equipment that will be running off the generator. Total the wattage requirements to determine the capacity of the generator. Compare wattage requirement and the price of the generator. If the generator is to be connected directly to the electrical system, then it is advisable to hire a qualified technician to install the transfer switch. Ensure that the generator has adequate storage capacity, longer usage time at a stretch, overload protection and auto shut off facility.

Portable generators are critical to have in emergencies or for use in areas where there is no traditional electricity. Always keep in mind there are safety issues related to the proper use of the generators. Portable generators can cause electrocution if they are left in the rain or sitting in water. Keep the generator under a canopy where it is protected, but not totally enclosed. It must still have adequate ventilation. Never touch the generator when you are standing in water or your hands are wet. Never run extension cords through water of any kind. Keep all unauthorized people away from the unit while it is operating.

Make sure all extension cords are of high enough rating for whatever load they are to carry. Also check for fraying, exposed wires or areas where the cord may be underneath something else and is hard to see. Many people will put cords under rugs or furniture, but this can harm the cord and hide any defects in the cord.

Check cords when the portable generator is operating to make sure they are not overheating. Overheating is an indication of too much load for the cord or else damaged wires inside the cord. Even though the cords may be rated for the load you have, if compressors are turning on and off, the load may be temporarily increasing beyond the rating.

Even with the best alternative system such as solar energy or wind energy, sometimes the weather may not cooperate and land us in darkness when the main power source fails. To keep our power system running, a backup engine generator may be just the thing. For businesses with sensitive computer networks, or homes with critical medical equipment, a back up power system such as a diesel generator may be necessary even when grid power is available.
